Michel's at the Colony Surf

$$$-$$$$, French, Waikiki

User Rating: ***** 4.7

Fodor's Review:

The wide-open windows are so close to the water that you literally feel the soft mist at high tide. This is arguably the most romantic spot in Waikiki for a sunset dinner for two. Venerable Michel's is synonymous with fine dining in the minds of Oahuans who have been coming here for 20 years. The menu is très, très French with both classic choices (escargot, foie gras) and more contemporary dishes (potato-crusted onaga fish). There's dinner nightly, and Sunday brunch.

A top shelf restaurant, but with a top shelf price

This was a beautiful restaurant on the Waikiki beach with great food and great service. Great view of the ocean with people playing in the surf just on the other side of a low wall. Everything was first class and it was definitely a very romantic place. This is not a French restaurant at all, either in its style or its menu. However it was very elegant. The $20 to over $30 price designation is somewhat misleading. Don't expect to get away from the table here for less than $100 a couple unless you plan on being very frugal. We went there for our fifth wedding anniversary and I believe that it was worth the $150 plus $25 tip that we shelled out. Per person that included one glass of wine, a salad, an entree, and a cup of coffee, and we shared a single dessert. If you buy appetizers, a full bottle of wine, or cocktails, you can quickly pass the $200 per couple mark. Entrees are priced from $18 to $49 (our choices were about $38 each), but entree portions are sized to warrant a salad, appetizer, or dessert for a reasonable sized meal unless you're a light eater. All in all we loved our meal at Michel's, but be sure to bring lots of money or a credit card.
