Fodor's Review:

In 1881 Australian William Purvis planted the first macadamia-nut trees in Hawaii near what is now this funky little town. But Honokaa's true heyday came when sugar was king in the early part of the 20th century. During World War II, this was the place for soldiers stationed around Waimea to cut loose. Today, little eateries and stores crammed with knickknacks, secondhand goods, and antiques occupy its historic buildings.
