A meandering 10-minute loop trail takes you to the best spots to see the two cascades, Akaka and Kahuna. The 400-foot Kahuna Falls is on the lower end of the trail. The majestic upper Akaka Falls drops more than 442 feet, tumbling far below into a pool drained by Kolekole Stream amid a profusion of fragrant white, yellow, and red torch ginger.

It's free, easy to get to, and the most beautiful waterfall on the Big Island. The walk through the rainforest alone to get there was worth it alone! TIP: a staff member at our hotel gave us this tip and we were really grateful: when you get to the entrance, you see a sign that points to one direction for Akaka Falls and another direction for the smaller waterfall Kahuna Falls. Even though you're there for Akaka Falls, take the route that goes by Kahuna Falls first--because it eventually ends at Akaka Falls anyway, but you'll have a much more beautiful walk and it's an easier walk than going in the reverse direction.RATING: 5.0
