Hands-down one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Kaunaoa is a long white crescent of sand. Kaunaoa Beach has the distinction of being named America's best beach in 2000, by "Dr. Beach," aka Dr. Stephen Leatherman of Florida International University -- the only Big Island beach to be so recognized. The beach, which fronts the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, slopes very gradually. It's a great place for snorkeling. When conditions permit, there is good body- and board surfing also. Currents can be strong, and powerful winter waves can be dangerous, so be careful. Beachgoers are welcome at the hotel's waterfront café, where there's a restroom. Public parking is limited to only 30 spots, so it's best to arrive before 10 AM.
