Fodor's Review:
Holualoa. Hugging the hillside above Kealakekua Bay, the tiny village of Holualoa is just up winding Hualalai Road from Kailua-Kona. A charming surprise, it's the kind of place where locals sit on their porches or in front of the stores and "talk story" (Hawaiian for shoot the breeze) all day long. It's comprised almost entirely of galleries in which all types of artists, from woodworkers to jewelry-makers and more traditional painters, work in their studios in back and sell the finished product up front. Formerly the exclusive domain of coffee plantations, there are still quite a few coffee farms offering free tours and cups of joe. Duck into the only café in town, the cleverly named Holuakoa Cafe (76-5900 Mamalahoa Hwy. 808/322-2233), and grab a cup to sip while you stroll through town.
