Edelweiss

$$-$$$$, German, Waimea

User Rating: *** 2.9

Fodor's Review:

An authentic German gasthaus right in the middle of Hawaii, Edelweiss is truly a great place. Fear not if you don't see anything you want on the menu; there are 15 to 20 daily specials that your server will rattle off without batting an eye. No one can figure out how (or why) they do it. The rack of lamb is always good, and anything ending in schnitzel is a safe bet, as are items ending in brat or braten. The chicken Cordon Bleu is large enough and rich enough for two. Soup (almost always what sounds like a weird combination turns out to be a real treat), salad, and coffee or tea are included in dinner prices. The wine list is decent, but c'mon, get the Hefeweizen. You won't have room for dessert with the size of their portions, but you're not missing much. If you're a potato pancake fan, call two days ahead and the kitchen will whip up a batch for you.

What a joke!

Very bad, unquestionably! No notion of hours of operation, seat-of-the-pants operation. Twice in a row they woudn't serve us lunch at 12:50, well within the claimed hours of operations! When got in eventually, service was outrageous, rushed and rude, food was mediocre at best (their "famous" bratwurst was sub-par), beer was not cold enough, etc etc. NEVER AGAIN! An over-priced, horrible service, not playing by the most elementary rules restaurant. An outrage.

Quick service with lots of choices

If you've tired of the overpriced resort resturants of the Big Island then this may be a welcome repreive. Don't be turned off by the short menu as your server will rapidly rattle off at least 15 "specials" of the day to go with what's on the menu. A short but adequate and resaonably priced (for Hawaii) wine list is available. Service is prompt and entrees include soup AND salad.
