Museums / Galleries, St. Petersburg
Fodor's Review:
The Spanish surrealist certainly had a different way of viewing our world as evidenced by exhibits at theSalvador Dalí Museum, which holds the world's most comprehensive collection of his work. Paintings such as "Eggs on a Plate without a Plate" and "The Hallucinogenic Toreador" are among the 95 oils, more than 100 watercolors and drawings, and 1,300 graphics, sculptures, photographs, and objets d'art displayed here. Frequent hour-long tours are led by well-informed docents. How did the collection end up here? A rich industrialist and friend of Dalí, Ohio magnate A. Reynolds Morse, was looking for a museum site after his huge Dalí collection began to overflow his mansion. The people of St. Petersburg vied admirably for the collection, and the museum was established here as a result.
