Few folks think of the islands when visiting Tampa, but this 12-story hotel on a 177-acre man-made islet in the Bay is just an eight-minute walk or short drive from downtown Tampa, the St. Pete Times Forum, and the convention center. The rooms are decorated in whites and bright colors and many have terrific views of the water or the downtown skyline. Service is attentive. There's a marina, and you may use the extensive health and fitness center and 20 tennis courts at the Harbour Island Athletic Club, next door, for $17 daily. Pros: Close to downtown but doesn't feel like it; trolley from hotel to the convention center or to the electric streetcar (TECO) station (from which you can travel to Channelside, the Florida Aquarium, or Ybor City). Cons: Not the best choice if you want the freedom to roam the Bay area.
