The main highways into Greater Miami from the north are Florida's Turnpike (a toll road) and Interstate 95. From the northwest, take Interstate 75 or U.S. 27 into town. From the Everglades, to the west, use the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41), and from the south use U.S. 1 and the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike. In general, Miami traffic is the same as in any other big city, with the same rush hours and the same likelihood that parking garages will be full at peak times. Many drivers who aren't locals and don't know their way around might turn and stop suddenly, or drop off passengers where they shouldn't. Some drivers are short-tempered and will assault those who cut them off or honk their horn. Motorists need to be careful, even when their driving behavior is beyond censure, especially in rental cars. Despite the removal of identifying marks, cars piled with luggage or otherwise showing signs that a tourist is at the wheel remain prime targets for thieves. The city has also initiated a TOP (Tourist Oriented Police) Cops program to assist tourists with directions and safety.

Car Rental

The following agencies have booths near the baggage-claim area on MIA's lower level: Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National, and Royal. Avis and Budget also have offices at the Port of Miami. If money is no object, check out Excellence Luxury Car Rental. As the name implies, rent some wheels (a Ferrari, perhaps?) to cruise SoBe. If you can't find the excellent car you want, rent a Dodge Viper, BMW, Hummer, Jaguar, Porsche, or Rolls Royce from Exotic Toys. Airport pickup is provided.
