The glass-enclosed, air-conditioned Calder Race Course has an unusually extended season, from late May to early January. The high point of the season, the Tropical Park Derby for three-year-olds, comes in the final week, usually on January 1. Gulfstream Park, north of the Miami-Dade County line, usually has racing January through April, plus a casino with slots and poker tables open year-round.
