Deerfield Island Park, reached only by boat, is a group of coastal hammock islands. Officially designated an Urban Wilderness Area along the Intracoastal Waterway, it contains a mangrove swamp that provides a critical habitat for gopher tortoises, gray foxes, raccoons, and armadillos. As of this writing, Deerfield Island Park remained closed because of damage stemming from Hurricane Wilma. When open, boat shuttles run on the hour Wednesday 10-noon and Sunday 10-3; space is limited, so call for reservations. Call also for special events.
