African-American Research Library and Cultural Center

Libraries, Fort Lauderdale

Fodor's Review:

A two-story, $14 million gem, a few miles west of downtown, this resource provides locals and researchers from around the world with more than 75,000 books, documents, and artifacts centering on experiences of people of African descent. The family of the late Emmy Award winner Esther Rolle -- Florida Evans on television's Good Times -- has donated much of her memorabilia, from beaded gowns to letters, photos, and awards for display. Rolle, of Bahamian descent, died in 1998, and grew up with 17 siblings in Pompano Beach. There's a gift shop and a small café, and parking is free.
