Fodor's Review:
Sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, this small but engaging museum explores and explains the science behind current news headlines. A permanent exhibit includes animations of groundbreaking science with interactive displays showing how these discoveries make their way into the public realm. The other exhibits illustrate the research of the Academy on subjects that intersect with public policy, such as global warming and DNA sequencing. The highlight of the global warming display is Bessy, a model cow whose emissions of methane (the second greatest contributor to the greenhouse effect) are part of a wider explanation showing connections to El Niño and hurricanes. In the DNA section, the bright computer panels explore how genetic sequencing is connected to everything from finding the origin of SARS to criminal investigations. Though the interactive exhibits are fun and educational, they are aimed at ages 13 and up.
