Fodor's Review:

Diners who visit star chef Cathal Armstrong's understated restaurant in charming Old Town pick between sitting in the bistro or the chef's tasting room. Comfortably contemporary in shades of pale moss and cinnamon, the bistro is known for plates such as bacon, egg, and cheese salad and pork belly confit. Glossy wood floors and buttercup-yellow couches set the scene in the more intimate, expensive tasting room, where a five-course meal is $95 and a nine-course meal $125 per person. Here, look for the distinctive lobster crème brûlée, butter-poached halibut with leek cream, and fried apple with ricotta tart. Even a Bloody Mary gets new life here, with lemongrass and chilies.

An excercise in mediocrity

Posted by food_spy from Alexandria on 1/28/08
The atmosphere of this Old Town, Alexandria establishment is beautiful. The decor is simple, comfortable, charming, and non-intimidating. Unfortunately, that's about all it has going for it. It's easy to tell that the ingredients are high quality; however, the use of said ingredients leaves something to be desired. Bland and unimaginative are two terms that come to mind. Ingredient combinations in individual offerings lack cohesion and in some cases, flavor. The service is also subpar. Do not look to get good service from the hostesses, who obviously take themselves very seriously. In my opinion, the service has been choreographed to make people believe they are dining in a very important place. This is just not so. The cheese tray and the wine list are lovely. It's just a pity that the quality represented in these two items can be found at any number of other, much better establishments.

Perfect for a special occasion

I took my family to the Tasting Room at Restaurant Eve for my grad school graduation. Everything about our experience was impeccable. When we arrived the hostesses were very friendly and welcoming; they remembered, and gradulated me, on being there for a special event. The wait staff was the best I have ever experienced. The waiter was attentive and knowledgable, not just about the menu, but also about the origin and history of ingredients. Everyone from the busers to the sommelier was helpful and friendly; there was absolutely no pretension. We were at our table for almost six hours, and there was no push to get us out the door. The ambience was also wonderful. The tasting room was quiet and comfortable. We had the chef's nine course menu and everything on it was amazingly good. Even food I don't normally like was delicious. I have had a lot of good meals, but this was far and away the best overall experience. Restaurant Eve is a bit expensive, but it is well worth it.
