Torpedo Factory Art Center

Arts / Performance Venues, Alexandria

Fodor's Review:

Torpedoes were manufactured here by the U.S. Navy during World Wars I and II. Now the building houses the studios and workshops of about 160 artists and artisans and has become one of Alexandria's most popular attractions. You can view the workshops of printmakers, jewelry makers, sculptors, painters, and potters, and most of the art and the crafts are for sale. On the second Thursday of every month, the building hosts an Art Night, in which the galleries stay open until 9. The Torpedo Factory also houses the Alexandria Archaeology Program (703/838-4399. www.alexandriaarchaeology.org), a city-operated research facility devoted to urban archaeology and conservation. Artifacts from excavations in Alexandria are on display here. Admission is free; hours are Tuesday through Friday 10-3, Saturday 10-5, and Sunday 1-5.
