Government Buildings, The Mall
Fodor's Review:
Although there's not a lot to see inside, this complex is too gargantuan to ignore. The offices of the governmental agency responsible for setting and carrying out the nation's agricultural policies are divided up between two buildings. The older white-marble building, on the north side of Independence Avenue, was begun in 1903. Its cornices on the north side depict forests as well as grains, flowers, and fruits -- some of the vegetation the department keeps an eye on. The newer building, south of Independence Avenue, and built between 1930 and 1936, covers two city blocks. A one-room visitor center with displays and audio stations highlights the nation's agricultural, food safety, and nutrition policies.
