Winter sports in Colorado are not limited to skiing. You can strap on a pair of snowshoes and tramp along trails you would walk in summer. Snowshoers pack a lunch and a thermos of hot cocoa, soy chai, or tea, and take in stunning views while getting a bit of exercise. Even in January, the Front Range has milder daytime temperatures and lots of sunny days. Don't forget the sunscreen -- at this altitude, you can sunburn quickly in winter. Dressing in layers is advisable; in the forests, you'll be warm, but out in the open, the wind can be frigid.
For $15 per day you can rent snowshoes from Alpine Sports (2707 Spruce St. 303/325-3231 or 877/325-3231). Multiday discounts apply.
