Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum

Fodor's Review:
One of the best picnic spots in a very picnic-friendly park, this 55-acre arboretum specializes in plants from areas with climates similar to that of the Bay Area. Walk the newly updated Eastern Australian garden to see tough, pokey shrubs and plants with cartoon-like names, such as the hilly-pilly tree. Kids gravitate toward the large shallow fountain and the pond with ducks, turtles, and egrets. Another favorite is an area devoted to aromatic plants; take a deep sniff of lemon verbena or lavender. As of this writing, several of the garden's pathways were being renovated, so expect some work in progress. The bookstore is also a great resource. Maps are available at the main and Eugene L. Friend entrances.
