Service and hospitality have been points of pride at this hotel since its 1914 opening, when room rates started at $1 a night. Now, compact rooms are attractively furnished in classic English style with walnut furniture. The front-desk and concierge staff are adept at catering to your every whim: they can book anything from a Fisherman's Wharf tour to a dinner reservation. For a slightly higher rate on weekends, you can enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening bar service next to the lobby.

Small and eccentric, but the people are good

I made a reservation at the King George Hotel at the recommendation of a friend of mine, who stays here semi-regularly when he's in town for business. It was in a perfect location for me, as a conference I was in town for was less than 5 blocks away.
First, the good: The service is very friendly and responsive, and ready to help if you need it. There's 24-hour room service (though it's fairly limited fare, consisting mostly of greasy griddle type food), it's quiet, and there is an in-house bar/restaurant.
However, there are a few negatives. The rooms are extremely small; my room really felt like something you'd find in London, with 85% of the floor space being taken up by the bed. The ceilings are very low, and the color scheme is a little weird, especially considering the random quotations that are painted on the walls by the door. Plus, I had problems with my bathroom; the pipes made weird gurgling sounds almost constantly, and my toilet wouldn't flush at all the first night I stayed here. (Not to mention the absolutely dismal water pressure in the shower... there's no bathtub, either.)
