Fodor's Review:
It seems that everyone in town has a strong opinion about the new museum, unveiled in 2005. Some adore the striking copper façade, while others grimace and hope that the green patina of age will mellow the effect. Most maligned is the 144-foot tower, but the view from its ninth-story observation room, ringed by floor-to-ceiling windows, is worth the price of admission alone. The building almost overshadows the de Young's respected collection of American, African, and Oceanic art. Works by Wayne Thiebaud, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Richard Diebenkorn are the painting collection's highlights. The museum's 2008 schedule includes Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer's Life. Your ticket here is also good for same-day admission to the Legion of Honor.

Foreboding Structure

The exterior of the new de Young looks more like a prison than a museum. Once you go inside, the central stairway is intimidating and the flow between areas of the museum is confusing. If you overcome these obstacles, the collections are eclectic, primarily modern American art. It's worth a visit here just to better appreciate the great art museums of New York City and Chicago.
