Beach Chalet

Bars, Golden Gate Park

Fodor's Review:

This restaurant-microbrewery, on the second floor of a historic building filled with 1930s Works Project Administration murals, has a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, so you may want to time your visit to coincide with the sunset. Get there at least 30 minutes before sunset to beat the dinner reservations. If you come right at dinnertime or even at lunch on weekends, diners with reservations will be given first dibs on the window seats (and on tables in general). The bar is toward the back, with a so-so view of the action. The American bistro food -- which, for appetizers, includes ahi tuna tartare and fried calamari -- is decent, the house brews are rich and flavorful, and there's a good selection of California wines by the glass. The seasonal Oktoberfest brew is a highlight of the beer menu. The cheaper Park Chalet (above) on the ground floor has park, rather than ocean, views.
