Candelas

$$-$$$, Mexican, Gaslamp Quarter

Fodor's Review:

The scents and flavors of imaginative Mexican cuisine with a European flair permeate this handsome, romantic hideaway in the shadow of San Diego's tallest residential towers. Candles glow everywhere around the small, comfortable dining room. There isn't a burrito or taco in sight. Fine openers such as cream of black bean and beer soup, and salad of watercress with bacon and pistachios warm diners up for local lobster stuffed with mushrooms, jalapeño peppers, and aged tequila; or tequila-flamed jumbo prawns over creamy, seasoned goat cheese. The new, adjacent bar pours many elegant tequilas and has become a popular, often jam-packed nightspot.
