$$, Downtown
Fodor's Review:
A major remodel in 2006 transformed the former Pickwick into a practical and stylish downtown destination. The Sofia's rooms are small, but clever details help guests feel looked after; rooms feature pillow-top mattresses, an ergonomic work station, contemporary bath fixtures, and a mini-refrigerator and microwave for doggie bag leftovers. The four slightly larger VIP suites offer an extra sitting area and soaking tubs in the bathrooms. Weary travelers will benefit from spending time in the Zen-like yoga studio or getting an in-room massage. The fireside lobby invites guests to curl up with a book or chat with other visitors. The hotel is a short walk from the convention center, Gaslamp District, and Horton Plaza shopping.
