Osteria Romantica

$, Italian, La Jolla

User Rating: **** 4.2

Fodor's Review:

The name means "Romantic Inn," and with a sunny location a few blocks from the beach in La Jolla Shores, the look does suggest a trattoria in Positano. The kitchen's wonderfully light hand shows up in the tomato sauce that finishes the scampi La Jolla Shores and other dishes, and in the pleasing Romantica salad garnished with figs and walnuts. Savory pasta choices include lobster-filled mezzelune (half moons) in saffron sauce, and wonderfully rich spaghetti alla carbonara, while main events might be chicken with fennel or a nice plate of breaded veal scallops crowned with chopped arugula and tomatoes. The warm, informal service suits the neighborhood just fine.

Garlic-free!

Posted by joannadee from Florida on 9/30/07

Love Italian food, but am allergic to garlic. The true test for me is a restaurant that says "No problem - we can make any dish without garlic". This tells me how fresh my meal will be. Osteria was a great find - we were just driving to the beach and found it. The ravioli in pink sauce was delicious, as was the salad. Went there twice in 2 weeks! Highly recommend.
