Gauzy draperies and a rock wall flowing with water create a dreamy rain-forest effect in the back room of this excellent newcomer to the Gaslamp Quarter's booming restaurant row. One of the best Thai restaurants in San Diego, Rama combines professional service with a kitchen that understands the subtle demands of spicing the myriad dishes. The tart, pungent, spiced-to-order (as everything can be) talay (seafood soup -- it literally means "ocean") pairs well with a crispy duck salad as a light meal for two. Dozens of curries and stir-fries take the tastebuds on exciting adventures in flavor. The front dining room is now a private club; as a result, reservations are advised.

I can't say enough about this place. The decor is really special--there are sheer drapes between all the tables so would be a great place for a romantic dinner. You feel really secluded. The quality and quantity of food is excellent. Great curries. Some nights, they have sushi which is really good too. You can select the level of spiciness, so even if you don't think you like Thai food because of its spice level, you will be ok here.
