W Hotel

$$$-$$$$, Downtown

User Rating: ** 2.0

Fodor's Review:

Come here for the trendy decor and neon drinks, not the service. The W chain's urban finesse adapts to San Diego with nautical blue-and-white rooms with beach-ball pillows and goose-down comforters atop the beds. The Beach bar has a heated sand floor and fire pit, but the pool is tiny by San Diego standards. The lobby doubles as the futuristic Living Room lounge, a local hipster nightspot where nonhotel guests have to wait behind a velvet rope. Be sure to get a room on an upper floor -- the leather- and black-clad crowd parties into the night. The hotel restaurant, Rice, serves stylish Asian and Latin cuisine, and the Away Spa caters to both body and spirit.

Stay away!!!!!

Posted by David from Toronto Canada on 11/5/06

Considering the rates this place is a dump. It appears to be run a totally incompetent management team that needs to be fired. I showed up at 6pm Saturday and had to wait 90 minuters while my room was prepared. Later that night there were big ugly bouncers at the front door making sure you showed your key in order to enter. Some welcome! I've never seen that in asia, europe or anywhere else. No free newspaper arrived Sunday morning as promised. I got back at 3:30 pm Sunday after a long meeting and the room hadn't been been touched by housekeeping. If you travel and work, there is no proper work space and/or chair. The desk "chair" looks like some kind of retro 70's plastic kitchen chair with zero adjustment. I travel about 150 days per year or more and this is by far the poorest run hotel I have ever seen anywhere in the world. Stay away and save your money. W Hotels has a major problem in need of serious work.

After Hours Cinemax Movie Scene

Posted by Frank from New Jersey on 4/10/06

Stay here if you want to be a part of a hip scene, with plenty of peeople-watching, and access to lobby-area bar, and rooftop sandbar (great scene on weekends). However, don't stay here if you have a family with kids, or want great service. The staff is friendly, but totally So Cal, so there is no sense of urgency to appease you or intense work ethic (except for valet guys). The pool deck is embarrassing. Your bath-tub at home is larger than the pool, while the building blocks the sun most of the day. And unless you are on fire, you will not see a poolside attendant. Is this W San Diego or W Omaha? Rooms are typical "W", tight and trendy, but comfortable and clean. Limit how much luggage you bring, otherwise you might want to sleep with your suitcase to ensure walking space. The restaurant is ok, but nothing special. For $300 (including tax) a night, you would expect more. You are better off hitting the Hyatt, or thr new Omni by the ballpark, both are much closer to water and the Gaslamp district for bars/eats.
