New owners, KSL Resorts, totally renovated this legendary resort in 2004-2006, dramatically transforming its laid-back '50s look into a Spanish colonial oasis with dark wood, open-beam ceilings and paneling, crystal chandeliers, and leather and wrought-iron furnishings. Ample guest rooms, in shades of brown and sand with oversize chairs and sofas, fill a collection of two-story buildings surrounding the lobby, Club House, and conference center. There are flower-decked gardens and fairway views throughout the resort's 400 tree-shaded acres -- and the best of all fairway views may be from one of the state-of-the-art bikes in the fitness center. The resort's Blue Fire Grill attracts a local following for its coastal cuisine featuring local seafood and vegetables. There are two PGA championship golf courses, a large tennis center, and -- new in 2006 -- a family entertainment area.
