George's California Modern

$$$-$$$$, American, La Jolla

User Rating: ***** 4.8

Fodor's Review:

Formerly George's at the Cove, a $2.6 million makeover brought a new name and sleek updated look to this eternally popular restaurant overlooking La Jolla Cove. Hollywood types and other visiting celebrities can be spotted in the sleek main dining room with its wall of windows. Simpler, more casual preparations of fresh seafood, beef, and lamb reign on the new menu chef Trey Foshee enlivened with seasonal produce from local specialty growers. Give special consideration to imaginatively garnished, citrus-cured yellowtail, succulent garlic-roasted chicken, chickpea-crusted petrale sole, and spice-braised Duroc pork shoulder. For more informal dining and a sweeping view of the coast try the rooftop Ocean Terrace ($-$$).

Great Views

A wonderful place to watch the sunset and have a delicious meal at the same time. At night, it can get a cool. Not all of the heat lamps warmed up the many tables, so bring a light jacket just in case. Service was quick. A lively crowd, all seemed to be having an enjoyable evening.

George's Was Good To Us!

Posted by kimamom from California on 1/28/07

After a day so relaxing, shopping and sight-seeing in La Jolla, we chose George's at the Cove for our dinner. The service was very friendly, the food was excellent and the ambiance very nice. They are in the process right now of remodeling, so it's bound to be better than ever in a few weeks when the remodel is complete. Don't miss this one!

THIS PLACE IS WORTH IT

Posted by James from London, UK on 10/22/06

The place is beautiful but the reason to come here is for the food. There are no words to describe it...and I've eaten at the best restaurants all over the world. Best part is, for what you are getting George's is resonably priced. The 5 course taster menu pared with fantastic wines was not very much (about 120), especially when you consider how much other restaurants of this caliber charge. Cannot recommend this place enough. You wont regret a visit.

Great views, shame about the pretentious server

Posted by Rita from Atlanta on 6/26/06

Visited on recommendation of a San Diego native. The food was excellent and views stunning. Prices were reasonable for the quality. Unfortunately, the attitude of our server left something to be desired. He obviously thought we weren't worth the trouble of being more than superficially pleasant, since we weren't waelthy wanabees. Hopefully he took note when I knew more about the ingredients they were using and the dishes they were serving than he did. Would return for a second visit, but probably to the more casual part of the restaurant.

Everything is beautiful, from view, servers and food

Posted by Brooks from Nashville, Tennessee on 4/8/06

Georges is the ultimate dining experience in San Diego. The service and atmosphere are out of this world. The food is delicious. It is always my first stop from the airport. I love the outside terrace and the bar is open and beautiful. Servers are very professional and personable. This is a must go to.
