Coronado and South Bay

Map of Coronado and South Bay

Although it's actually an isthmus, easily reached from the mainland if you head north from Imperial Beach, Coronado has always seemed like an island and is often referred to as such, including by the city fathers. The Spaniards called it Los Coronados, or "the Crowned Ones," in the late 1500s and the name stuck. Today's residents, many of whom live in grand Victorian homes handed down for generations, tend to consider their community a sort of royal encampment, safe from the hassles and hustle of San Diego proper.
