For a few short weeks in summer, during the annual summer meeting of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (Take I-5 north to Via de la Valle exit, Del Mar. 858/755-1141. www.dmtc.com) on the Del Mar Fairgrounds, racing forms and racing fans can be seen all over Del Mar. The track attracts the best horses and jockeys in the country. Racing begins in mid-July -- tradition dictates that women wear a hat on opening day -- and continues through early September, every day except Tuesday. At the entrance to the track's parking lot, open Wednesday through Sunday, is the Surfside Race Place at Del Mar (858/755-1167), where you can bet on races at tracks throughout the country, shown on TV via satellite.
