Fodor's Review:

Open your balcony door and listen to the sounds of a free-range Sea World at the Portofino. Ocean- and channel-side rooms echo with the calls of sea birds and sea lions; harbor side rooms look over sailboats and docks. From the hotel's very private peninsula, walk or bike to the nearby seaside lagoon or rent a kayak and explore the protected harbor. The hotel was completely updated in 2006: it's now beachy but sophisticated – guest rooms are a mix of blues and yellows, set off by crisp, white bed linens. Compact, well-designed bathrooms are accented in stainless steel, with extra-plush towels and pleasing Spa Terre products. In its own building overlooking the harbor, is Baleen, the hotel's excellent restaurant – a most welcome addition to the South Bay dining scene. Expect higher rates in summer and for ocean-view rooms.

Harbor seals make up for a lot!

Posted by Gablefan from Central Ohio on 4/25/08
We've stayed here several times. Don't get an oceanside room if you're a light sleeper...the many harbor seals just outside in the harbor bark a lot! Didn't bother me, but it might interrupt others' sleep. Pluses: The location is good, with easy access to the PCH and 405. The rooms are clean, and the staff has been unfailingly nice. Minuses: Pretty small pool; bathrooms are on the small side; have to pay to park or hike in from the adjacent parking lot.
