A vestige of Venice's founding days, the Venice Beach House was one of the seaside enclave's first mansions. Many Craftsman-era details remain: dark woods, the glass-enclosed breakfast nook, a lattice-framed portico, and a fleet of stairs. Privacy is not why guests stay here – soundproofing standards are circa 1911. Recently added air-conditioning helps somewhat. However, historic charm radiates and the location, steps from the beach and boardwalk, is what Southern California is all about.

I had the pleasure of finding the Venice Beach House online and called and made a reservation. From management to housekeepers the staff was fantastic. The breakfast was tasty and the ambiance was just perfect. It is my new home when visiting L.A.
