Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

Zoos / Aquariums, San Pedro

User Rating: ***** 4.8

Fodor's Review:

Dedicated to the marine life that flourishes off the southern California coast, this Frank Gehry-designed center gives an intimate and instructive look at local sea creatures. Head to the Exploration Center and S. Mark Taper Foundation Courtyard for kid-friendly interactive exhibits and activity stations. Especially fun is the "Crawl In" aquarium, where you can be surrounded by fish without getting wet. From March through July the aquarium organizes a legendary grunion program, when you can see the small, silvery fish as they come ashore at night to spawn on the beach. After visiting the museum, you can stop for a picnic or beach stroll along Cabrillo Beach.

Hidden Gem

Posted by David from LA on 1/1/06

This little museum has lots of fun hands-on exhibits and is a hidden gem. Don't let the gritty bowels of San Pedro scare you away. Visit the Korean Friendship Bell and Point Fermin Park, too, while you're in the area. Well worth the effort!
