Fodor's Review:

Looking like a prop street set up by a film studio, Heritage Square sticks out like a row of bright dollhouses in the modest Highland Park neighborhood. Five 19th-century residences, a train station, a church, and a carriage barn, built between the Civil War and World War I, were moved to this small park from various locations in southern California to save them from the wrecking ball. Docents dressed in period costume lead visitors through the lavish homes, giving an informative picture of what life in Los Angeles was like a century ago. The latest addition is a 1907 boxcar, now parked next to the Palms Depot, originally part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The grounds are free on Friday 10:30-3:30, but the buildings are closed. Guided tours are available for $10 on weekends. They are also open on most holiday Mondays.

  • Cost: $10
  • Open: Fri.–Sun. noon–5

Heritage Square is a great place for both events and tours. However, I have to correct a bit of information reported: 1) The cost for a tour is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors, $5.00 for children under 12 2) New phone number is 323-225-2700 3) Hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:30 PM, with guided tours at 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM 4) Organization has some great events - next fundraising event is the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Summer of Love. Others are the Annual Lamplight Celebration, MOTA Day, Silent Movie Nights, and Holloween. Check the website at www.heritagesquare.org for more info.
