Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust

Museums / Galleries, West Hollywood

Fodor's Review:

This Museum, dedicated solely to the Holocaust, has struggled to maintain a permanent home and often faces confusion with the Museum of Tolerance (further west on Wilshire). Now located adjacent to the Jewish Federation, the museum features an extensive collection leading you on a circular journey. Rooms filled with photos and artifacts lead visitors through experiences representing the rich culture of European Jewish life before the Holocaust, on to the destruction of Kristallnacht, and the squalor of ghetto life. Visitors then must step through a replica train car to the horror that awaited the fate of most Jews -- the concentration camps that ultimately ended with 6 million deaths. The museum also documents resistance movements and fights against Nazi power as well as the founding of Israel. A library and media room is available for research. The museum hosts special events, limited-time exhibits, and lectures. Supporters recently found a new location for the museum and plans are in the works to build a permanent home.
