Neighborhoods / Streets, Westside
Fodor's Review:
Laid out in the 1930s as a master-planned shopping district next to the UCLA campus, Westwood Village has lost some of its luster as locals opt for one-stop shopping centers and multiplexes. But the Village offers some terrific movie theaters, like the Mann Village, and casual eateries; on weekends, it still teems with students. Look for the long line of students outside Diddy Riese Cookies at 926 Broxton Avenue, which bakes up L.A.'s best (and cheap) cookies late into the night. Westwood is also the site of a cemetery with one of the world's most famous graves. Tucked behind one of the behemoth office buildings on Wilshire Boulevard is Westwood Village Memorial Park (1218 Glendon Ave.). Marilyn Monroe is buried in a simply marked crypt on the north wall. For 25 years after her death, her former husband Joe DiMaggio had six red roses placed on her crypt three times a week. Also buried here are Truman Capote and Natalie Wood; Jack Lemmon and Billy Wilder are posthumous neighbors
