Typhoon

$$, Asian, Santa Monica

User Rating: ***** 4.6

Fodor's Review:

Owner Brian Vidor, who traveled the world as a rock musician and naturalist, brings home some of his favorite gastronomic experiences to this restaurant. If you can tear your attention away from the windows overlooking the Santa Monica Airport flight paths, the exhibition kitchen, and the mirrored weather map above a crowded bar, you can embark on a culinary grand tour of Asia. You'll find sashimi from Japan, samosas from India, and curries from Thailand. For even more adventure -- or bragging rights -- you can order stir-fried crickets, Manchurian mountain ants, or scorpions, all beautifully seasoned.

Really Fine place

Posted by Todd from Florida on 10/20/06

This place is a gem, for a number of reasons: The food, smaller plate samplings from numerous Asian regions (Thai, Vietnamese, Malay, Philipino) is just very good. (You may or may not want to sample the insects, though.) Service is fine, and the atmosphere, looking out on the runway at the Santa Monica Airport, is somehow fitting its across-the-globe cuisine. Prices are moderate, at most, and given how many movie stars fly their little planes in and out of the airport, a sighting is inevitable. The Hump, its sister sushi bar upstairs, is very very good, but just too pricey. But Typhoon really deserves a try.
