Hotel Bel-Air

$$$-$$$$, American, Bel Air

User Rating: ***** 5.0

Fodor's Review:

This secluded hotel's restaurant spills into a lush garden, with a terrace overlooking a pond dotted with swans. A meal at this special-occasion spot will make you feel like a Hollywood insider (read: keep an eye out for celebs). But the restaurant's not just a pretty face; look for seasonal appetizers such as seared scallops and crispy sweetbreads with cauliflower cream or the signature tortilla soup. Entrées could include poached Maine lobster, bouillabaisse, and -- if you really feel like splurging -- a $300 slab of premium Kobe beef with béarnaise, for two. The hotel also hosts a superlative high tea, and Sunday brunch on the terrace can be magical.

The Bel Air reminds one if time was stopped in the LA forties of Raymond Chandler and Phillip Marlowe. With the possible exception of Sandy Lane in Barbados, this is the coolest hotel in the Western Hemisphere.
