Beautiful and boisterous, St. Helena's most stylish restaurant fills a converted 1923 Craftsman-style home, where earthy colors are made even warmer by the glow of three fireplaces. Woodsy ingredients such as chanterelles or juniper berries might accompany sweetbreads or a hearty grilled loin of venison. Inventive salads and delicate desserts such as the blood orange sorbet demonstrate chef-owner Todd Humphries' range. In warm weather, angle for a table on the patio, where lights sparkle in the trees.

This place is exceptional in every sense of the world. By far the best dining experience I had during my one week trip in Northern California.
