De Loach Vineyards

Wineries / Breweries, Russian River Valley

Fodor's Review:

Just far enough off the beaten track to feel like a real find, De Loach Vineyards produces a variety of Russian River Valley sauvignon blancs, gewürztraminers, merlots, and zinfandels but is best known for chardonnay and, especially, their pinot noir. Some of the pinot is made using open-top wood fermenters that are uncommon in Sonoma but have been used in France for centuries. (Some think that they intensify a wine's flavor.) Tours focus on the estate vineyards outside the tasting room door, where you can learn about the labor-intensive biodynamic farming methods they use, such as burying cow horns filled with cow manure in the vineyards (sounds wacky but there's actually a good reason behind it). On summer weekends, local produce is sold on the front porch, conveniently near the picnic tables.
