The first winery founded in the Napa Valley, Charles Krug Winery opened in 1861 when Count Haraszthy lent Krug a small cider press. Today the Peter Mondavi family runs it. At this writing, tours have been suspended indefinitely because a major earthquake retrofit project is in the works, but you can still come for tastings. Though their lush red Bordeaux blends, limited-release syrah, and zinfandel are good, go for something unusual with their New Zealand-style sauvignon blanc. Its zingy flavor of citrus and tropical fruit is rare in wines from this area.

With the construction project under way, there's not as much to do on property, but the staff was friendly and informative--Pam took us through a tasting complete with comparisons, and for we newbies that was great! I had a great conversation with Ralph when I was in the gift shop, and boy does he know some stuff!! I had no idea how many variables go into the flavors /smoothness /qualities of wine, simply at the vineyard stage. Overall, well worth my time.
