One of the best-known local wineries isBenziger Family Winery, on a sprawling estate in a bowl with 360-degree sun exposure. Among the first wineries to identify certain vineyard blocks for particularly desirable flavors, Benziger is noted for its merlot, pinot blanc, chardonnay, and fumé blanc. The tours here are especially interesting (they're first come, first served). On a tram ride through the vineyards, guides explain the regional microclimates and geography and give you a glimpse of the extensive cave system. Tours depart several times a day, weather permitting, but are sometimes fully booked during the high season. Arrive before lunch for the best shot at joining a tour -- and bring a picnic, since the grounds here are lovely.
