Set amid saguaro forests and mesquite groves in the Tucson Mountains (yet only 15 minutes to downtown), the city's newest -- and largest -- resort opened in early 2005. Massive sun-bleached stone walls blend rather than compete with the natural surroundings, and there are stunning views from the interior dining areas and lounges. Outside terraces, with chairs and sofas clustered around kiva fireplaces, overlook the pools, golf course, and desert valley. Complimentary tequila shots, along with a dramatic recitation of the story of Pancho Villa, liven up the bar during happy hour. Resort amenities include an on-site Starbucks.

JW Marriott is a beautiful hotel, in a spectacular location on the west side of town. Yes, it takes a little driving to get to and to get into town to eat etc, but we thought it was well worth it.
They have free self-park at the golf course {Covered parking} with a shuttle that runs back and forth to the hotel that runs every 10 minutes.
The rooms were really nice. We had requested a king, but they were only able to confirm 2 doubles when we reserved {done the day before}. When we got there, the only king they had available was accessible room. We took it and it turned out to be a suite with a really nice sitting area. It wasnt a city lights view, but that really wasnt all that important to us. The only real difference was the shower and the closet. Room was comfortable, attractive and had half of the fridge set aside for personal use.
The hotel has free tequila toast each night at 5:30 pm which is fun. The first night, there were 2 telescopes set up outside to look at the stars which was nice.
The pool area is plain and in sun. There are 2 pools, and it seemed like one was intended to be for adults only but it was not enforced. One pool had a sign that said Laughter and the other said Relax but I dont think anyone got the hint. There were enough lounges and umbrellas for shade, but no trees for shade.
We had dinner at 2 of their restaurants Primo and Signature Grill which were both very good. There is a little Starbucks there for relatively inexpensive breakfast.
There were conferences while we were there, but it didnt really seem to impact us. The service was good all around and the only impact was a busy lobby.
There is a free guided hike each morning {at 6 am before it gets hot} and 3 nights a week. It was really nice to get out early and see the local landscape before it got hot. We would definitely return!

One of the best in town

When the JW Marriott opened last year, as with any new business, it had to overcome a few bumps in the road. I think it came through with flying colors. This resort is one of the most serene and relaxing places you can find anywhere in southern Arizona. Its gorgeous setting in the Star Pass community is incredible and the views breathtaking. The rooms are average size but very luxurious with beautiful marble bathrooms and the most comnfortable beds in the industry. The pool is great for adults to relax and order a frosty drink or to have fun with the kids in the splash area. The back patio has firepits and Chimaneas to sit near that take the chill out of the evening desert air. The service is friendly and very attentive. The spa is well thought out and comprehensive. We especially loved their fine Italian restaurant Primo. It Truly is. Very creative dished and be sure to order the Zeppoli for desert. Overall, a great desert resort offering every amenity you can ask for along with great food and service. We've stayed in some of the finest resorts across the country and this one is up there. The price reflects the level of this hotel, I would go back in a heartbeat.

NEW RESORT, BUT ALREADY IN NEED OF A NEW MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR!
Posted by Dave from Quincy on 1/30/06
The only reason that this resort would deserve a chance would be the spectacular views of the surrounding desert terrain and downtown city lights. Otherwise, don't waste your hard earned money on this place. We had two rooms. On the first night, the television broke in one of the rooms. It took two hours of maintenance going in and out of the room to make a decision to replace the TV with a new one. In the other room, we would stand in water while showering because it was draining so slowly. This resort has a beautiful outdoor lounge, where you should be able to enjoy your evening cocktail as you watch the sunset. However, out of eight of their patio heaters, five were broken! On a cool desert night, people were almost fighting over the seats close to those three working heaters. This is a new resort, and already in disrepair, so I can't imagine what it will be like once it has a little age on it. On top of that, there was a surgeons' convention being held there during our stay. Now, this would have been fine, except for the running/refrigerated semis in the parking lot. Yes, these semis held new medical equipment and cadavers, so that the surgeons could go out and experiement with the latest technology that was being showcased at the convention. Sorry, but I don't like to spend $399 a night for a spa/oasis resort hotel that has this in the parking lot during my stay.
