Fodor's Review:

This 32-acre hideaway in the Santa Catalina foothills is part guest ranch, part resort, and entirely gracious. It's a charming and lower-price alternative to the larger resorts. Designed in classic Mexican hacienda style, this former finishing school for girls attracted stars like Clark Gable, Katharine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy when it was converted to a guest ranch during World War II. Some of the one- and two-bedroom casitas have fireplaces and private porches, where you can watch the sun set over the Tucson Mountains. The superb Grill at Hacienda del Sol is part of the resort.

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever"

Not to be put off by the dusty road that ascends to this amazing gem of a resort nestled into the countyside with stunning views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Our accomodations were in the Casita Grande which proved lovely, spacious and decorated with a truely delightful southwestern flavor. A private patio facing the mountains and a marvelous veranda facing south where we enjoyed coffee in the morning - very tranquil. The terraced pool and Hot Tub areas were so tastefully situated within the resort that you were able to appreciate the beautiful natural setting as well as the impeccable landscaping. Oh, the food! From our 1st evening, tired from travel and not knowing what we were hungry for we enjoyed a late night dinning experience on the patio which was magical. The grilled artichokes, crab cakes, andoille sausage, tenderloin of beef and sirloin burger were all exceptional along with the service. If this wasn't enough we were treated to the talents of a very pleasing singer/musician. Dinner the following evening at the Grill once again did not disappoint along with the more sophisticated southwestern decor. A wonderfull breakfast buffet was partaken each morning and so graciously served on one of the tables on the veranda situated just outside the Grill. The fruit-so very fresh, the made to order omelets cooked to perfection and the pasteries so flaky and flavorful. Our only frustration was in the fact we were only there for two nights. To enjoy Tucson at its best The Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch is where you need to be!!!

we rented a casita with great views. the room service was excellent, great food, especially the stuffed peppers with goat cheese. service is a little sketchy, especially front desk. other than that, nice place to soak in some history.

Best restaurant overall in Tucson

Posted by Marjorie from Marlton, NJ on 2/20/06

Every year I attend the Gem Show in Tucson and have a wonderful time, but this year I had an exceptionally great time because of the service, the food & drink, the music and the atmosphere at the Hacienda Del Sol Resort. It rates a 10 in my book. The outdoor heated patio was romantic and entertaining. Food was better than I expected and the staff was attentive and very pleasant considering they were to busy to even breathe. See you all next year.
