The Heard museum is not to be missed. It is one of the largest, most comprehensive collections of Native American art in the Southwest. There's even a large section of the museum which is targeted towards children and their interests (left side as you walk in)." -mykidsherpa Pioneer settlers Dwight and Maie Heard built a Spanish colonial-revival building on their property to house their collection of Southwestern art. Today the staggering collection includes such exhibits as a Navajo hogan, an Apache wickie-up (a temporary Native American structure, similar to a lean-to, constructed from branches, twigs, and leaves, sometimes covered with hides), and rooms filled with art, pottery, jewelry, katsinas, and textiles. The Heard also actively supports and displays pieces by working Indian artists. A fabulous new long-term exhibition entitled Home: Native People In the Southwest, opened in 2005. Annual events include the Guild Indian Fair & Market and the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest. Children enjoy the interactive art-making exhibits. The museum also has an incredible gift shop with authentic, high-quality goods purchased directly from native artists. There's a museum satellite branch in Scottsdale that has rotating exhibits, and another in the West Valley featuring some of the Heard's permanent collection as well as rotating exhibits.
