Toqué!

$$$-$$$$, Contemporary, Vieux-Montréal

User Rating: ** 2.3

Fodor's Review:

Toqué is slang for "just a little mad," and the name fit when Chef Normand Laprise catered to the überhip in a bright and funky storefront on rue St-Denis. But there's nothing mad or crazy about his current gray-and-burgundy home on the ground floor of a glass tower, or about the pin-striped, expense-account crowd it attracts. Still, Laprise -- the earliest champion of home-grown Québec products -- hasn't lost his touch with the food. The menu changes daily, depending on what he finds at the market, but dinner could start with ravioli stuffed with braised duck followed by lamb from the Gatineau Valley. For dessert, cross your fingers and hope the almond-crusted blueberry pie is on the menu.

Over rated and over priced

Way too expensive and size of the portions is ridiculous. Rack of lamb at $60.00 for three tiny ribs. Cheese by the gram, they must be kidding. Will not repeat.

Overated!

The waiters are stiff (they wear StarTreck like uniforms)and not very polite. I guess they try so hard to be proper that they become anoying. As a French person and a good cook, I can do much better at home and under $500.00 (for 4 ) with wine! The decor is 70's and boring! Will not go by or recommend.

Nothing Special !!

Posted by Joe from New York on 10/6/06

Had a really disappointing dinner here the other night. The foie gras appetizer with he dried reductions was boring and a bit messy to eat. The "suckling pig" was a couple of pork tenderloin medallions and a piece of chicharron in this foam. The best part of the plate was the garnish. And, what's with this foam? Use this with fish and meats that don't need a sauce. Not for pork. The deserts were also just average; although, the yogurt with the rosemary crisp served in a little canning jar was very clever and nicely flavored. Service was a mess. Lots of waiters running around bumping into each other. I think my table was served by at least 6 different guys. Yet, I still had to pour my own water and wine out of dirty bottles that left black rings on the table. And, the fools brought the coffee at least 10 minutes before the dessert. Overall, an uncoordinated mess. And, all this for $300. Stay away from here.
