1725 AD 1725. Merchant Pierre du Calvet -- a notorious republican and Freemason -- entertained Benjamin Franklin behind the stone walls of this elegant 18th-century home in Vieux-Montréal. Today it's a B&B luxuriously decorated with antique furnishings and Oriental rugs. Its Filles du Roy restaurant specializes in such traditional Québecois dishes as tourtière (meat pie) and braised venison, while the Le Calvet dining room celebrates classic French cuisine. The glassed-in garden, filled with flowers and potted plants, is a great place for breakfast. Pros: garden setting for breakfast; opulent antiques. Con: not the best choice if you're traveling with kids.
