Da Emma

$$-$$$$, Italian, Vieux-Montréal

User Rating: ***** 4.5

Fodor's Review:

The cellar of what used to be Montréal's first women's prison hardly sounds like the ideal setting for an Italian restaurant, but fear not: Mama Emma's cooking is satisfying enough to drive out any lingering ghosts from those sad days. The place's stone walls and heavy beams make an ideal, catacomb-like setting for such Roman specialties as suckling pig roasted with garlic and rosemary and, on very special occasions, tripe Romaine. You might also want to try Mama's big juicy meatballs.

A restaurant like no other...Meat Lovers UNITE

Posted by MTLFoodie from Boston on 11/25/07

I thought the service was excellent. Extremely busy night but the food was AMAZING!!! Our waiter Paulo made the wait worthwhile, making us laugh while he was explaining the extensive menu and checking on us often during the evening. Make sure to get the fettucini with porcini mushrooms and the lamb....it doesn't get any better than this. Simple, but DELICIOUS. Be ready to take your time, this isn't McDonald's. There is a reason why it's so busy:)

I love Da Emma, we go there each time we visit Montreal and have had fantastic service, food and atmosphere. I do not understand the poor ratings in here. I have gone there at least 10 times and each and every time a perfect evening well worth the trip !!!!!!!

Excellent, food, Emma, patio...waiters, except one rude

It took a long time for someone to even notice us, it must have been because we were not with the other beautiful people who appeared to be regulars. After 45 minutes, I finally asked for bread. The bread came, but the waiter left without taking our order, or even showing us the menu. After another 30 minutes, a kind older waiter took pity on us and took our order. The younger waiters paid a lot of attention to the other guests, food was served quickly and a lovely banter between them was evident. We are not people who complain about service, but these waiters were extremely rude, arrogant, and displayed a "don't care about you" attitude. If it wasn't for the amazing food prepared by the lovely (we met her later) Emma, we would have left feeling that the staff and the low quality of service would not warrant the price. The older waiter was a kind gentleman, and it was only with his insistance, that we stayed. As the other waiters obviously do not or could not care whether or not out of town visitors came back. We've been to many other fine Italian restaurants in Montreal, and being Italian ourselves and just coming back from a visit in Italy, was embarrased to say the least at the poor manners. As a frequent visitor to Montreal on business I would hesitate recommending this restaurant to clients. A shame really. Emma is a marvel at what she does with the food. All that would be needed for this to exceed a 3 star rating would be to hire staff that care about everyone, and treat all guests as they the enters the restaurant as if they mattered.
