Chez l'Épicier

$$-$$$$, French, Vieux-Montréal

User Rating: ***** 4.5

Fodor's Review:

It's a bit of a gimmick, but this is indeed an épicier (grocer). Shelves stocked with such products as Hawaiian sea salt and lobster oil fill the front part of the room, along with refrigerated displays of pâtés and terrines. The menu, printed on brown paper bags, starts with appetizers such as shepherd's pie (made with snails instead of beef and spiked with roasted garlic) and a nutty parsnip soup flavored with orange and ginger. The more-conservative main dishes might include such delicacies as poached Chilean sea bass and veal chops in sherry-vinegar sauce.

Really surprising lunch!

Posted by Joe from New York on 10/6/06

We were walking in the area the other day window shopping and decided to drop in for lunch because the place was a bit busy and didn't look too touristy. Had to wait a few minutes for a table, but, had a little fun looking at some of the "groceries". The food was surprisingly good. The curried cauliflower soup was hot and fabulous. The braised lamb main course was tender, well sauced and garnished with beautiful little roasted potatoes. Dessert was the four creme brulees. Great!!! Nice attentive service. A very pleasant lunch.

Modern French Food in an Old Grocery Store

The food was creative and delicious. The service was great -well paced and unobtrusive, but the waiter was always there when you needed her. I will definitely return.
