Tre Marie

$$-$$$, Italian, Little Italy

User Rating: *** 3.2

Fodor's Review:

When a young man from Montréal's Italian community meets someone he thinks he might get serious about, this is where he often takes her. The stucco walls and dark-wood trim give the place a little class, and the food is a lot like Mama's -- veal stew, for example, and veal tripe with beans and tomato sauce. And if you're feeling really hungry, there's a three-pasta dish that could feed a family of four.

All that Glitters isn't Gold !

The two of us went there on a Friday St Patrick's Day; thought about proposing to my girlfriend there. When you walk in, you're treated to beautiful tiles, freshly painted walls and Italian styled painting frequenting the walls. There is a beautifully wood crafted bar in the middle. If everything looks this good, the food has to be exceptional too .. you would think, but guess again. Maybe a few years ago when the 3 sisters were starting off they took a passion in making home made foods and treats, but take it from me. It's more commercialized now .. the sauces taste conservative and so does the rest of the menu. I thought all Italians were Catholic, but you couldn't tell, since they only had 2 fish dishes on a friday during Lent. The desserts are also limited and don't expect your waiter to ask you if you want dessert. Most of the time you won't see him, except for the first minute after the food was delivered. "Is your food, ok ?" Come back and ask me when I got a chance to try it. Oh by the way, isn't it the waiter that asks you if you want dessert of coffee .. here they don't. I felt obliged and weird to ask the waiter if it was ok for me to order dessert. Or maybe if you're a local your waiter will come to visit you more, but don't expect it on your first date with this restaurant. I mentioned about getting engaged at this place .. well had the waiter and hostess been more friendlier. I had a ring in my pocket and waiting for the right time. Was going to talk to the restaurant to see if they can help me with the proposal by putting the ring into her dessert. Hey, the idea was good, didn't have the right people there to execute it. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't terrible, but you can get that at most italian restaurants. Guess Fra Diavolo sauce is not part of their vocabulary.

Not what was expected AT ALL...

I have to say, that after hearing and reading about this restaurant that was highly recommended by this website and by friends, my boyfriend and I were very disappointed. At first, the decor is very eye-catching and the restaurant seemed very comfortable and cozy. The staff however were extremely snobby, especially our waitress. She was apprently one of the sisters who runs the place. The catch of the day had already run out by 7pm...The meatless dishes were very limited with only 2 choices on the menu for seafood. Considering we are both Catholics and it being Lent, we wanted to stay away from meat. So I decided to have the pasta with mussels. well, the mussels were cold, and the paster barely had any sauce on it. The waitress was never to be seen again for the rest of the night. We had to refill our wine glasses, and practically had to beg the waterboy to take our order dessert. The dessert menu was scarce, as there were only 3 choices. Definitely not worth the money. Had the service and food been better, we would have considered going back to try some of the meat dishes at another time. However, none of the staff tried to make an effort to ask how our food was or if we needed anything else. You can also tell that they paid great attention to the regulars, but scoffed at us newbies. There is no way we recommmend this place to our friends nor will we ever go back again.
